Kendrick Lamar took the rap world by surprise Thursday night and made everyone temporarily forget about that other rap release when he dropped untitled unmastered, a mysterious project with tracks untitled apart from dates (“untitled 01 | 08/19/2014”).
It’s his first release since last year’s Grammy-winning To Pimp a Butterfly, but to call it a followup isn’t exactly accurate, as it’s actually eight tracks from his “chamber” of material from his TPAB recordings that didn’t make the album.
But even Kendrick’s leftovers are enormously intelligent, and like anything from the Compton rapper, untitled unmastered. demands a close listen, both lyrically— with sharp statements on racial politics — and sonically, with a unique blend of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, soul and funk. Read more…
