Horror house Potter-ized – #JHedzWorlD

Harry Potter movie series fans will enjoy walking inside the Wizards Gallery with a magic wand. The state-of-the-art horror house recently opened at SM Mall of Asia.

MANILA, Philippines – How many of us have experienced the thrill of going through a carnival ride inside some darkened stretch loaded with scary figures? Or walking through horror houses decorated with spider webs and loaded coffins that almost assured instant exercise of vocal cords through screams straight out of our diaphragms?

All in the name of clean fun and thrill as traditionally enjoyed by Filipino families.

But it’s 2016. Most of today’s young people are into wizardry, however fictional that is, and its perceived coolness. Big thanks to the success of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and their subsequent lauded film adaptations, the current youth and the young at heart have found an alternative to just letting out their heartiest screams while face to face with some scary sights.

That is, by waving a magic wand, and in the hope that by doing so it will spell tricks good enough to beat the monsters staring at our faces.

That is one cool thing to hold on to in Wizards Gallery, the newest delightfully scary center from Kidz Republic, which has been providing fun attractions inside SM malls for a decade now. It is a new concept mainly for the “thrill of fighting a monster with your own magic wand.” It is open for adults and kids seven years old and up.

Members of entertainment media were recently invited to experience Wizards Gallery which formally opened at the ground floor of SM Mall of Asia. Each was given a nicely crafted magic wand that lights up with a simple push of a button. Point the wand at the red round lifeblood of a monster and the latter stops dead probably before you even deliver a frightened yell.

“If you like Harry Potter, you will enjoy Wizards Gallery,” Kidz Republic owner Gigi Chua pointed out.

For one, Wizards Gallery diverted from the typical horror houses in that it employs robotic phantoms shaped up through state-of-the-art technology as enjoyed by moviegoers in blockbusters like Jurassic Park, and of course, the Potter series. The Interactive Shooting Walk-Through gives groups of thrill seekers a long stretch of stepping into the shoes of Harry Potter and the other young wizards we sympathized with in the best-selling books.

There’s also the Wizard’s Duel for two players “to cast spell to each other” and the Shooting Gallery where individual players target for one minute the hidden places that housed dragons, witches, and spiders. Points are earned for targeted hits.

One of the Wizards Gallery spokespersons noted, “This one is the first in Asia and it provides modern kids the venue to explore their thrill-seeking nature.”

Very telling is the kind of careful treatment given to the monsters placed for customers to face and stop with a wand. The Elder Dragon, for example, is made like a real movie monster, and the longer you stare at it the more it becomes life-like. Thus, movie buffs can definitely get their money’s worth experiencing Wizards Gallery.

The movie-tie in approach being adapted by Kidz Republic looks strongly effective, thus it also puts up a Pirates Quest at SM Megamall where thrill seekers are challenged to “escape a shipwreck and fight smugglers and buccaneers.” It is a fun game and its setting is obviously inspired by the Johnny Depp-starrer Pirates of the Caribbean series.

(Wizards Gallery also offers group reservations for parties and other occasions. For details, call 0905-2371522.)
