MANILA, Philippines – Expansion projects will put the Caticlan Airport in a spotlight as flight services are expected to increase and decongest the much farther Kalibo International Airport from the popular Boracay Island, an aviation think tank said.

In its latest report, Center for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) said once the runway extension starts functioning, a big chunk of flights from Kalibo is seen to be transferred to Caticlan considering its closer proximity to Boracay Island.

“Kalibo is not that convenient to Boracay and the local Kalibo market is very small. The upgrading works would enable the airport not only to support jet aircraft but also to serve international destinations,” CAPA added.

Famous tourist spot Boracay is currently served by two airports, Caticlan Godofredo P. Ramos Airport and Kalibo International Airport, neither of which is situated on the island itself.

Caticlan is considerably smaller and can only handle turboprops but is significantly closer to Boracay.

The Kalibo Airport is 70 kilometers away and will take around two hours to travel to Boracay while Caticlan is a short ferry ride to the island.

All international passenger services headed to Boracay are handled by Kalibo Airport and has more non-stop passenger destinations than any other of the peer group airports other than Mactan-Cebu.
