MANILA, Philippines – Local carriers are rallying behind newly-installed tourism chief Wanda Corazon Teo as they seek continued support and collaboration to improve the country’s tourism industry.

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) and budget airline Cebu Pacific considered the department as the “most vital in serving an industry considered as one of the nation’s key economic drivers.”

“We express our commitment to help DOT achieve its tourism growth target for the country, as we transport people, cargo, mount new flights to spur travel, and modernize our fleet, to increase passenger capacity,” PAL president and chief operating officer Jaime Bautista said.

He added PAL would fulfill its share in nation building and promote the country as part of the carrier’s main thrust.

“Tourism is a shared responsibility between the government and the stakeholders. We all have important roles to play in making tourism our country’s sunshine industry,” Teo said.

Furthermore, Cebu Pacific aims to continue its partnership with the department particularly in matters of long-term planning, close coordination and active collaboration with its regional offices.

The airline also seeks to advance the country’s interest in its priority markets including Australia, Japan, China, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong.

“As we increase our fleet to ‘fly where Filipinos are’ and to bring in non-Filipino travellers alike, we expect the DOT to continue in giving us more of those island connections, that would in turn help us expand our network and reach across the Philippines and within the region,” Candice Iyog, head of Cebu Pacific’s marketing and distribution said.

Teo continues to meet with different travel and tour organizations, associations, local government units, accommodation and transport sectors to ensure close collaboration between the public and private sectors.
