Who would have thought it could happen? I mean the idea that an old Tagalog nursery rhyme could propel a singing group to stardom and in the process, popularize a cappella singing. But it happened. In fact, it is happening now, with everybody singing Ang Tatlong Bibe just like the a cappella group Acapellago.

A cappella singing is nothing new. It dates back to the early days of Western music. I see it as a blend of Eastern chants and polyphonic singing. The best way to describe it is making music only with voices and without any musical accompaniment. This is not easy. You do not only need the voice but a really sharp ear to get the notes right. This must be why, a cappella was mostly heard only in churches and classical concerts. That has now changed.

The Akapela Open Competition with arranger, composer and long-time a cappella proponent Ryan Cayabyab at the helm, got the ball rolling. The contest made a cappella singing interesting to groups around the country. One of these was Acapellago, which won as grand champion of the first Akapela Open singing competition. The group returned to compete again in 2015 and again emerged as grand champion. It followed this up with the Gold Award Grand Champion all over Asia at the A Cappella Championship 2015 held at the ITE College Central in Singapore.

Then Acapellago started recording its own versions of current favorites a cappella style like On The Wings Of Love, Triangulo, Uptown Funk, Break Free and others and uploading videos on the Net. The singing was always very good but its chances of making it big like our usual pop stars was still very slim. This was so until one day while fooling around while waiting for its schedule at the studio, the group decided to sing and film its own version of Tatlong Bibe.

Daniel Matsunaga sang it in the TV series Be My Lady and viewers found it cute and everybody started singing and uploading their own versions. Acapellago’s, of course, turned out to be very special mainly because it was done a cappella and unlike other versions around. In no time at all, Acapellago had become social media stars and a major singing group, thanks to the millions who kept watching and liking Tatlong Bibe.

Acapellago has since then legitimized its singing of Tatlong Bibe by recording a real version and shooting a true music video.  Not anymore the ones they recorded and shot themselves. They are also singing one of the finalists in the Philpop Music Festival Competition, Stars Are Aligned with Jimmy Marquez, composed by JC Paez Jose. The finals will be held on July 23 at the Kia Theater. Watch and cheer for Acapellago and the other finalists.

Then in a sort of paying it forward gesture, Acapellago is at the forefront of the Combi A Cappella Nation campaign. This is a search for the next big A Cappella group by the biscuit brand Combi. This is a singing competition open to groups who can sing a cappella style. To join, simply go to Combi-nation on the web and check out the mechanics of the contest. Lots of prizes, plus that big chance to be like Acapellago, await the winners.

Acapellago is made up of Michelle Corpoz Pascual, the 21 year-old soprano known as Mich; Almond Pondevida Bolante, the 23-year-old counter-tenor; former child actor and commercial model Joshua Fernandez Cadelinia, 19, the group’s tenor; and the brothers Ronnel Allen Roman Laderas 24, bass singer; and Ricky Gavin Roman Laderas, 23, beatbox (player).

Still on a cappella music. One more notable contribution to the Philippines’ emergence as the a cappella singing capital of Asia came in the form of the recent victory of Pinopela in the recently-held International A Cappella Championships in Singapore. This was the same prize won last year by Acapellago.

Pinopela, which hails from Baguio, was named over-all champion of the competition. It also won as champion in the international category and the Judges’ Choice Award. Member Anthony Castillo was given the Most Impressive Soloist Award while Zsaris Mendioro won the Gold Prize in the looping category. Pinopela performed the songs Skyfall and All I Ask by Adele and Treasure by Bruno Mars. The group first came into the limelight when it won local Akapela Open Championship in 2014.
