General Hospital actress Kirsten Storms is taking a leave of absence from the show because of skin problems and stress. On Sunday, Storms, 32, tweeted, “My doctors say my breakouts are due to stress, but shouldn’t take too long to get under control. However, it was becoming too difficult for GH to cover up. And we all know in this biz appearance is important. She went onto say that she’s taking the next few weeks to heal and will be back in “no time.”

According to abc.go.com, Storms has been a fan favorite with General Hospital since May 2005, playing Maria Maximilliana “Maxie” Jones, the oldest daughter of Frisco Jones and Felicia Jones Scorpio.

Here’s what you need to know now:

1. Her Leave of Absence is Due to Skin Issues & Stress

People.com reported that Days of Our Lives actress Molly Burnett will temporarily take over Storms’ role in General Hospital. On May 29, Storms tweeted the following:

Tweeters! First, thank you for the outpouring of love & support. I appreciate the positive messages I’ve received. Second, yes I am taking a little break from work due to some skin issues I’ve been having. My dr’s say my breakouts are due to stress, but shouldn’t take too long to get under control. (I can say that I’m on the better end of it now) However, it was becoming too difficult for GH to coverup. And we all know in this biz appearance is important. In the meantime I look forward to seeing Molly on the screen as I take the next few weeks to heal. Again – thanks for the love and you will see me again in no time!

2. She is Going Through a Divorce

In April of this year, Storms announced her divorce from Brandon Barash, 36, after three years of marriage. Though the couple sought marriage counseling, they decided to call it quits. They have one child together, 2-year-old daughter Harper Rose Barash.

“We are splitting due to the cliche irreconcilable differences, but we’re splitting amicably. We have every intention of remaining a family through this and successfully co-parenting our kid and retaining a friendship in the efforts of raising her in a healthy environment,” Barash told Soap Opera Digest. Storms added, “This was not a hasty decision; a lot of thought and therapy went into this. We went to therapy for a long time, trying to figure out how to communicate better with each other. It’s not anything that we dislike about each other.”

3. Fans Are Expressing Their Support via Social Media

Storms’ fans have made it clear that they are in full support of her temporary break from General Hospital. There are almost two thousand comments in response to an announcement of the leave on her Facebook page. Suzanne Lautaret wrote, “It would’ve been great if the writers could’ve written that into the story line to promote awareness of a condition that many people deal with. You will definitely be missed. Get well and hurry back, Kirsten Storms!” Another fan, Jacqueline Wright, said, “What a sweetheart and thank you Kirsten for caring about your fans enough to share this personal side of you. You are amazing! Can’t wait to have you back…nobody plays Maxie like you.”

4. She Left General Hospital in the Past Due to Endometriosis

Storms took time off from General Hospital in 2012 due to endometriosis. According to mayoclinic.org, “Endometriosis (en-doe-me-tree-O-sis) is an often painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus (endometrial implant). Endometriosis most commonly involves your ovaries, bowel or the tissue lining your pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond your pelvic region.”

Because of the condition often having an adverse affect on fertility, Storms was surprised she was able to get pregnant. “In the grand scheme of things, a lot more women go through this than I think people realize or talk about,” Storms told Soap Opera Digest in 2012.

5. Storms Began Acting at a Young Age

According to soapoperadigest.com, Storms realized she wanted to become an actress at the age of 5. After performing in a local acting showcase, a talent scout talked her parents into signing her up for a “prestigious” New York acting workshop. Soon after, Storms was starring in commercials. Many acting jobs followed and her first experience with soap operas began with Days of Our Lives, where she played Belle from 1999-2004. She has played the part of Maxie on General Hospital since 2005.
