MANILA, Philippines – France’s Les Bleus and Team Canada, narrowly missing outright Olympic entry from their respective regional eliminators, get one last crack at the Rio Games against each other in the finale of the FIBA Olympic qualifier in Manila tonight.

The Frenchmen defused Turkey’s early breakaway bid and asserted their might in a 75-63 win while the Canadians beat out the foul-riddled New Zealand squad at the finish for a 78-72 victory in their side of the Manila OQT semifinals at the MOA Arena last night.

Second-string guard Tomas Heurtel gunned down 2-of-3 three-pointers and a total of 17 points and the rest of the Frenchmen, including the debuting Nicolas Batum, provided backup in dwarfing the tall Turkey squad.

Earlier, Corey Joseph fired away a team-high 20 points then their front liners asserted themselves versus the crippled New Zealand side at the finish as Team Canada squeezed into the final.

Tristan Thompson, Khem Birch and Melvin Ejim worked on a 7-1 closing flurry from a 71-all count and the Canadians whooped it up at mid court celebrating their final entry.

“New Zealand played a tough game. We didn’t shoot the ball the way we’re capable of, but we made some tough shots,” said Canadian coach Jay Triano.

New Zealand’s Tall Blacks fell by the wayside, with their bid against the Canadians suffering a terrible blow early on a severe ankle sprain sustained by scrappy all-around star Isaac Fotu in the opening quarter.

Fotu, among the leading players in the tourney with averages of 12.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists, returned from the halftime huddle already on civvies.

Still, the Tall Blacks engaged the Canadians in a nip-and-tuck battle before succumbing at the finish upon the exit of big men Robert Loe and Mika Vukona on fouls.

With Loe and Vukona gone, the Canadians moved in for the kill at the paint and roared to within a game of an Olympic berth that they missed on a semifinal loss to Venezuela in the 2015 FIBA Americas.

Runners-up in the 1936 Olympics, the Canadians are in chase of a return to the quadrennial games since the last of their nine Olympic stints in Sydney in 2000.

Joseph scored 20 points on 8-of-19 field goals while Thompson and Ejim contributed 13 points each and a combined 17 rebounds.

Carey Webster piled up a game-high 21 points while brother Tai collected 15 markers, 10 boards and four assists to lead New Zealand’s gutsy stand in the game marked by eight dead locks and 11 lead changes.

Thomas Abercrombie filled in for the early exit of Fotu, playing 34 solid minutes he laced with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Tall Blacks, however, crumbled in the end, unable to control the Canadian big men with Fotu, Loe and Vukona all gone.

Thompson, a player with an NBA championship ring with the Cleveland Cavaliers, drew Loe’s fifth and final foul and nailed two charities to break the 71-all deadlock with 3:19 left to play.

NOTES: This time, the Tall Blacks were greeted with warm applause after they performed their traditional “haka” war dance last night at the Mall of Asia Arena… Even in the end, the Tall Blacks were cheered on as they bowed out of the floor and out of contention. Forming a tight circle at midcourt, they waved to the crowd… It was a different scenario from a few nights ago, when the Tall Blacks played Gilas Pilipinas, and did their “haka” dance before the start of the game. The crowd booed the New Zealand players, perhaps misinterpreting the dance as a provocative act.

ABRENICA as the unheralded hero Hermano Puli

Though he has been working as a professional actor since 2007, Aljur Abrenica admitted that he didn’t start truly loving the craft until two years ago. Now, he has embraced it, he said, and is taking it more seriously.

For instance, for the coming historical movie “Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli”—in which he portrays the eponymous 19th-century Filipino hero—Aljur prepared himself by doing his own research and legwork, so that he could “give justice” to what he described as his career’s “most challenging” role thus far.

“Compared to the other projects I’ve done in the past, this one I really focused on—I immersed myself in it,” said the 26-year-old GMA 7 talent at a recent press conference.

Aljur, on his own initiative, spent three days in Lucban, Quezon province, to get a feel of the place where Puli was born and grew up, as well as to hear stories from the people living there. “I talked to the locals. I walked on the path Puli used to take from his home to the town proper—a two-hour trek. I visited the river where he used to take a bath,” he said.

He also read textbooks and scoured the internet to gather as much information on Puli as he could. But it was tough work, Aljur admitted, because there weren’t that many written material dedicated to the unheralded historical figure—a charismatic crusader who waged a revolt against the Spaniards in the name of religious freedom.

Eventually, it occurred to Aljur that Puli—whose real name is Apolinario de la Cruz—could very well be one of the most important heroes of our country, but whose contributions remain largely unknown to the general public.

“I grew frustrated because I believe Hermano Puli deserves more recognition among Filipinos. He was one of the first people who recognized the need to fight oppression, to fight for their rights,” related Aljur, who purposefully shed more than 10 pounds for the role, through strict dieting.

“This is what this movie aims to accomplish—to introduce to the public who Hermano Puli was,” added Aljur, who got his start in show biz via the fourth season of GMA 7’s reality-based artista search “StarStruck,” which he won.

Pious boy

Helmed by Gil Portes, “Ang Hapis” also tackles Puli’s formative years as a pious boy who dreamed of becoming a priest.

Later on in life, he tried to enter a religious order in Manila, only to be turned down simply because he was a native Filipino.

“I did all that research because I wanted to know every available detail about him—from the way he moved, how he looked, how he preached,” Aljur said, adding that unlike other more naturally gifted actors, he had to put in more effort.

Also in “Ang Hapis,” which opens on Sept. 21, are Louise de los Reyes, Enzo Pineda, Markki Stroem, Kiko Matos, as well as Aljur’s younger brothers, Vin and Allen. “It’s a dream come true to be working with my brothers. We got to bond after our scenes and celebrate if we do a good job,” he said. “This experience definitely made our relationship deeper.”

In the past, Aljur had been criticized for his “wooden acting”—a comment sparked by the fact that he once played “Machete” on television. Portes, however, observed that Aljur has shown improvement over the past few years.

Very SFW! Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, Nick Jonas and more musicians banded together to participate in a hilariously wholesome parody of Kanye West’s raunchy “Famous” video for BBC Radio 1.

While Yeezy’s eye-popping visual features wax figures of naked celebrities (such as Taylor Swift, Ray J, Amber Rose, Rihanna and Chris Brown, among others) lying in bed as a camera creepily pans over their artificial faces and body parts, the BBC’s G-rated version involves fully clothed pop stars innocently cracking jokes underneath the sheets.

The clip opens with Bieber, 22, and British songbird Cheryl tucked in together. The “Fight for This Love” songstress, 33, asks the Biebs, “Out of the two of us, who do you think’s the hottest?”

Naturally, the genetically blessed JB believes that he is more attractive and boasts about his “perfect symmetrical face.”

Next, Trainor, 22, hops in bed with Troye Sivan. The South African–born crooner jokingly attempts to make a move on Trainor by asking for her name, sign and number, to which she responds by quoting her 2016 smash, “No.”

In another LOL-worthy scene, Jonas, 23, slips under the covers with Carly Rae Jepsen. While Jepsen, 30, tells the youngest JoBro that she “really, really, really, really, really, really” likes him (a line from her 2015 hit “I Really Like You”), the “Jealous” singer inexplicably coos back, “I have to wear leather these days just to stay warm when I’m next to you.”

Other famous faces who took part in the project include Craig David, the boys of 5 Seconds of Summer and U.K. comedy duo Ant & Dec.
